Meet Chuckie! Chuckie is a male Jack Russell/Dachshund mix that is 4 years old and weighs12 Lbs. Chuckie is a very sweet boy with a lot of energy! He is so much fun and definitely doesn't act like he is heartworm positive. Most dogs, unless they are in the late sages of heartworms, don't really show any signs at all. Heartworms are transmitted by mosquito bites and once in the body they grow and multiply inside the dogs heart and then spread to other organs in the body such as, the lungs, causing pulmonary edema. Some other complications heartworms cause are an enlarged liver and heart murmurs caused by the worms blocking the blood from re entering the heart. Heartworms can multiply up to 250 live worms that live inside the heart and have a length of up to 12 inches per worm. That's a lot for any heart to take on! Heartworm treatment is expensive and most shelter dogs that are heartworm positive are considered unadoptable due to the costly expense of heartworm treatment. Sadly we see on average approx. 80-100 heartworm positive dogs each year! But thanks to donations made to Rockwall PAWS, dogs like Chuckie are able to receive heartworm treatment once adopted! Every penny that is donated to Rockwall PAWS goes directly to the heartworm treatment for each dog, like Chuckie, that are adopted from Rockwall Adoptions. Chuckie was lucky enough to find his furever home and is still needing heartworm treatment. Donating to Rockwall PAWS isn't just any donation, it's a donation that will help save the lives of these amazing dogs! Dogs like Chuckie!
